Graffiti is on the increase and shows no signs of stopping

Cllr Chris Jackman came back from holiday after May half-term to discover the graffiti. He and his daughter cleaned up the bus stop, but he says it is only a matter of time before it happens again.

Proposal to build 170 new houses raises environmental concerns

People are worried that the number of houses along with associated car parking and landscaping, will have a significant impact on the environment and are pushing for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The site was approved for 150 dwellings in the Farnham Neighbourhood Plan.

Mayor launches art trail

Farnham’s mayor and mayoress attended the launch of the North Farnham Art Trail at Kiln Photo, as part of Surrey Artists Open Studios (SAOS).

Mayor Brodie Mauluka opened the event and spoke of his interest in the arts, and was pleased to be shown the photographic exhibition and the charity cabinets of artworks from all participating artists.

Student has drawings published in new book

A soon-to-be illustration graduate from UCA has played her part in a new book of rhymes about the London underground.

Stephanie Zhao, from Farnham, was picked to illustrate Wonderground. A book written and conceived by London-born creative Harry Miller, after responding to his call-out via a UK university noticeboard.

Stephanie brought to life Harry’s rhymes for each underground line, guided by his description of the kind of image he imagined and incorporating her own touches.

Great turn out for village fayre

The Recreation Ground was full of people and the car park had to be shut as early as 1.30pm as the event had reached full capacity. Rowledge School gymnastics opened the fayre with the new addition of a stilt walker and giant bubbles.

Alan Earwaker reflects on his time as mayor

Cllr Alan Earwaker’s time as mayor of Farnham has come to an end and it was certainly a long period of time.

Alan was first elected as mayor in 2021 and was then asked to stay on for a second year. He was re-elected for a third time in 2023, becoming the first mayor in Farnham Town Council’s (FTC) history to do so.

Packhouse's ‘magical’ and 'one-of-a-kind' Santa bought joy to so many children

Michael Senior, 74, passed away in December last year and The Packhouse, which hosted his Santa visits, and the community have paid tribute to him.

The Packhouse, an interior and lifestyle store located in Runfold just outside of Farnham, said they will no longer host their annual Santa visits as it “would not feel right” without Mr Senior.

Waverley borough has the highest gender pay gap in the South East, study finds

However, the gap in Waverley is a chasm compared to the regional figure, showing women’s earnings are on average 33.8 per cent less than men’s in the borough for full- and part-time jobs.

Young Muslims to distribute 1,000kg of food and other aid from Farnham warehouse

A Muslim youth association has collected 1,000kg of food and other necessities for those in need.

The local chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) UK launched a two-week campaign in early January and has amassed a huge stockpile of aid at its Farnham warehouse.

AMYA’s regional outreach and welfare co-ordinator for Hampshire and Surrey, Haris Khan, described the donations as a “good turn out” and that people were really “keen” to get involved.

VIDEO: Incredible woodland scene carved into bench at Frensham recreation ground

What was once a sweet chestnut tree is now a bench featuring carvings of a squirrel, a deer, an owl, a badger and a fox.

The tree had to be felled because of the impact of Storm Eunice on its root structure which could have caused nearby tree roots to fail if it was left alone.

Farnham roadworks round-up: Where to dodge the traffic jams this week...

There are several roadworks to avoid in the Farnham area this week – with one scheme to last until Friday, January 26.

From Monday, January 15 to Tuesday, January 16 there will be roadworks along Upper Hale Road, Monkton Lane and Alma Lane.

Delays are likely in Alma Lane especially and there will be a two-way traffic management system in place.

Upper Weybourne Lane is expected to have possible delays as work goes underway to replace a leaking communication pipe in the carriageway.

Alice Holt's owl and woodpecker play-sculptures to go after 25 years of fun

Both sculptures are over 25 years old and have exceeded their expected lifespan, having been built in 1997.

They have been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of children, but for safety reasons they are being removed at the end of January.

The gifts are needed for the branch’s fundraising auctions and tombolas for the year and no donation is too small.

Farnham's 'fantastic' Freddie, 12, reaches for the stars after BBC experience

Although he did not win, Freddie was pleased at how far he made it in the competition and described the experience as “brilliant”.

Freddie said: “It has definitely given me more confidence when singing in front of people and I’m not as nervous.”

Loneliness is on the rise across Farnham, says new NHS social prescribing team

Since the Farnham Primary Care Network (PCN) launched its Proactive Anticipatory Care Team in May, the service has received 112 referrals from GPs and other NHS health workers. Of these, at least 30 per cent are to address loneliness, isolation or befriending requirements.

According to the team, these patients have little or no contact with anyone.

But sadly, the number of volunteers has reduced and there is pressure on services because of limited capacity.

Farnham Library offering free coats for those in need this winter

In the spirit of giving, Farnham Library has launched a ‘Coats for All’ initiative, offering free coats in various sizes for adults and children.

Huge sewage leak in Churt threatens stream flowing into Frensham Great Pond

Thames Water engineers are yet to find the root cause of a huge sewage leak in Churt that has closed a key road in the village for much of the past two weeks.

Tankers are currently taking away the village’s sewage by road 24 hours a day, seven days a week after a 67 year old riser main burst on Saturday, December 9, on the Hampshire side of Barford Lane.

Duncan and Mike began to learn the art in their early 20s and met at another aikido club. They practised there for many years but Duncan wanted to set up his own club.

The Countryside Regeneration Trust (CRT) is seeking an “entrepreneurial” tenant farmer to take over the herd of prize-winning cattle at Pierrepont Farm in Frensham.

Young talent on display at fringe future artists day

It was a successful future artists day at the Shottermill Club for young people interested in art or music.

Haslemere commemorates 80 years since D-Day

It was nothing but blue skies and sunshine for the 80th anniversary commemoration of D-Day in Haslemere.

The ceremony began with a proclamation by town crier Christian Ashdown, who the wrote the piece himself. Incredibly, his proclamation was chosen to be read out by town criers nationwide and internationally.

Choir and acclaimed composer release a CD

A collaboration between chamber choir Excelsis and composer Clive Osgood, has resulted in the release of a CD of Osgood’s setting of the Magnificat.

It was recorded last autumn with the London Mozart Players, soloist Amy Carson and directed by Robert Lewis.

The setting has been written as a companion piece to J.S Bach’s famous setting, making use of a more contemporary musical language. The track et misericordia has been played a number of times on Classic FM.

Mayor and mayoress celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

It took place on Saturday June 1, 50 years to the day after they were married at St. Andrew’s Church in Farnham. The occasion was an al fresco hog roast luncheon in their garden at Woodlands in Wrecclesham.

Charity's search for a new site

Change of Scene is a small children's charity and care farm. Supporting young people struggling in education, it is currently based in Farnham, on land belonging to the charity's founder.

Since her retirement in 2020, she has generously allowed the charity to keep operating from there, but it is not a permanent solution.

To ensure the charity is able to keep supporting more than 150 vulnerable young people per year, it needs a new home. Without a new site, the charity will have to close.

The Young Writers competition encourages children to learn poetry and rhythm, and the nursery has entered a few times over the years. This year proved to be the winning year and all children who entered were published into the My First Poem book.

Care home to launch breakfast club for town's emergency services

The team at Redcot residential care home in Haslemere, will be providing a breakfast club to say thank you to the town’s emergency services.

The home is run by charity Friends of the Elderly, who will launch the Blue Light Breakfast Club on Friday, June 12 from 9am to 11am.

Three years of free period products for Surrey residents

The campaign gives all Surrey residents free period products and SCC was the first county council in the UK to start stamping out period stigma. It was launched in 2021 with Binti International, the first period charity registered in the UK.

Last year, SCC relaunched the campaign with new period pad donation boxes and period pad collection trays across 40 libraries in the county. Farnham Library is one of these points including nearby Aldershot, Camberley, Godalming and Haslemere.

December 21st will mark the 50th anniversary of the official signing of diplomatic relations between Australia and China. The anniversary provides an opportunity for us to reflect on ourselves in the Australia-China space and to celebrate our achievements and events that have taken place. People continue to celebrate the life and work of Yolanda López after her passing on September 3, 2021 after complications with cancer. She is known for her work in reimagining representations of women within Chicano/a culture and society. López died a month before opening her first-ever solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art on October 16.

In July, I was lucky enough to attend Country to Canberra’s Project Empower workshop in Hawker, South Australia. I finally got to meet Hannah Wandel in person and C2C volunteer Stephanie Davies who was helping facilitate the S.A. workshops. The Indo-Pacific Student Mobility Youth Dialogue is a new initiative to bring together Australian students to discuss the future of international education and mobility.
